Pre Menstrual Syndrome (PMS) and Ayurveda

As we mentioned in previous article, Premenstrual syndrome effects over 70% to 90% of women before menopause in the US and less for women in Southeast Asia because of their difference in living style and social structure. The occurrence of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) have more than doubled over the past 50 years due to the acceptance of it as a medical condition that is caused by unhealthy diet with high in saturated food. Premenstrual syndrome is defined as faulty function of the ovaries related to the women's menstrual cycle, it effects a women's physical and emotional state, and sometimes interferes with daily activities as a result of hormone fluctuation. The syndrome occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts. In this article, we will discuss how ayurveda treat PMS.

Ayurveda treatments are individualized based upon a person’s imbalance of 3 doshas. The three doshas are Vata, pitta and kapha. Since ayurveda recognizes the imbalance of 3 doshas which cause pre menstrual syndrome, therefore if PMS is caused by
I. Vata imbalance
Since vata dosha governs all physiological aspect of human body, imbalance of vata dosha causes depression, anxiety, mood swing, sleeplessness and other nervous tension resulting in premenstrual syndrome, then treatments include
1. Meditation and relaxation.
2. Foods must be warm and avoid intake of any cool or cold foods. Some food may be suggested to taken during menstrual cycle to reduce the symptoms of PMS.
3. Dry ginger and black pepper may be added in the daily diet to warm the body and balance the vata dosha.

II. Pitta imbalance
Pitta dosha governs all aspects of physiology transformation in the human body, imbalance of ptta dosha causes anger, irritability, digestion and mental sharpness resulting in premenstrual syndrome, then treatments may include
1. Massage with cool essential oil
2. Keeping the body cool by eating uncooked, cool foods such as pears and melons.
3. Slow down work pace and take more time to relax
4. Herb motherwort contains substances that helps to inhibit the heat in the body, thereby helping to reduce symptoms of PMS.

III. Lapha imbalance
Lapha dosha governs all structural integrity of the human body including improving the immune system in fighting against environment toxins accumulated into the body. Lapha imbalance causes weight gain, bloating and depression resuling in pre menstrual syndrome. Treatments include
1. regular and moderate exercise
2. Food must be warm before taking. Eat a lot of vegetables and fruits
3. Avoid any foods with heavy taste such as too sweet, salty and sour.
4. Foods with high amount of vitamin C with cleansing body toxins may be suggested to take everyday during menstrual cycle.
